Separation Standards

Departure Separation

Appropriate separation must be maintained at all times when handling arriving and departing aircraft. Use the following rules to ensure the right amount of separation is supplied.

Do not issue takeoff clearance to a helicopter until…

  • the other helicopter has departed and left the takeoff area.
  • the other helicopter has arrived and taxied off the landing area.

Arrival Separation

Appropriate separation must be maintained at all times when handling arriving and departing aircraft. Use the following rules to ensure the right amount of separation is supplied.

Do not issue landing clearance to a helicopter until…

  • the other helicopter has come to a stop or taxied off the landing area.
  • the other helicopter has departed and left the takeoff area.

Takeoff Clearance

Runway

When departing from a runway use the rules and phraseology previously discussed in the Departure Procedures section.

Example:
N312PD, runway 17, cleared for takeoff.

Movement Area (Other than runway)

Issue takeoff instructions as previously described in Departure Procedures section and issue any additional instructions as necessary.

Example:
N312PD, taxiway K, cleared for takeoff.
N312PD, present position, make left turn for northbound departure. Cleared for takeoff
N312PD, helipad F, make left turn for northbound departure. Avoid B737 holding short of runway 17. Caution wake turbulence. Cleared for takeoff.
N312PD, taxiway K, make left turn for northbound departure. Avoid C172 holding short of runway 17. Remain east of runway 17. Cleared for takeoff.

Non-Movement Area

Since non-movement areas are not controlled by ATC, the pilot must be informed that a departure from that position will be at their own risk. If takeoff is from a non-movement area and, in your judgment, the operation appears to be reasonable authorize the departure. Provide additional instructions/advisories as necessary.

Example:
N312PD, departure from present position will be at your own risk.
N312PD, departure from transient parking will be at your own risk. Use caution B737 holding short of taxiway K.

Landing Clearance

N312PD, make circling right turn to taxiway K, hold short of K7 remain east of runway 17. Caution wake turbulence. Cleared to land.

Non-Movement Area

Since non-movement areas are not controlled by ATC, the pilot must be informed that a landing at that position will be at their own risk. If landing will be at/on a non-movement area and, in your judgment, the operation appears to be reasonable authorize the landing. Provide additional instructions/advisories as necessary.

Example:

N312PD, landing at transient parking will be at your own risk.
N312PD, landing at Tac Air will be at your own risk. Use caution B737 holding short of H3 on H.
