    • When deviating between two assigned headings, ATC must now use a dash between the headings rather than the previously used plus character. Example: D180-210.
    • When assigned a speed, you are no longer required to have a prefixing S or M if the value has a – or + after it indicating that the pilot has been assigned the speed value “or greater”/”or less”.
  • NON-RADAR “EXPANDED ROUTE”
    • The .65 will now define the route characteristics for the specific minima is to be used rather than using the general term “expanded route”.

26DEC2022

  • vERAM One-Click Track Feature
    • On 21DEC2022, vERAM 1.3.8 was released allowing users to starts a track on a target without the target squawking their assigned code. This feature was created as a work-around for a “VATSIM’ism” and should only be used during initial sign-on of a a previously unstaffed position and for an untracked target coming from an unstaffed position near you.
    • To utilize this command, hold down CTRL and SHIFT at the same time and then center-click on a target.
    • Workflow suggestion after starting the track:
      • Dwell Lock (highlight) the datablock by left-clicking the callsign. (This is to remind you that there is something still to do with the aircraft)
      • Assign a new squawk code, if needed. (F9 Key/QB command)
      • Review flight plan to prepare any required changes, if needed. (F6 Key/SR command)
      • Send ContactMe message. (Home key)
      • Move on to next aircraft.
      • When initial aircraft checks on, remove the dwell-lock by left clicking the callsign and if needed, assign the new squawk code.
Note: It is suggested to NOT “RADAR ID” the aircraft, as this work-around was created to solve an issue that is not relevant in the real world: having many random, un-RADAR ID’d aircraft in a sector.
    • Refer to the ZLC vERAM Guide > Command Quick Reference for more information.
  • ACTION REQUIRED:
    • vERAM User:
      • Read the above information^

12DEC2022

  • vNAS / VATSIM Server
    • To prepare for the transition to the new vNAS system and future release of CRC, automatic beacon code allocation will be enabled on the live and sweatbox servers on 12/19/2022. This means that all flight plans departing NAS (National Airspace System) airports will automatically receive a beacon code according to National Beacon Code Allocation Plan https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Order/FAA_Order_JO_7110.66G_NBCAP.pdf
    • We’d like you to note that this change does have the potential to alter controller workflow, as some controllers rely on the presence of a beacon code in a flight plan to signify that an aircraft has received a clearance. This process will no longer work, and we encourage you to use other means such as flight strip annotations, scratchpad entries, and/or data block positioning to signify that a clearance has been issued until our SOPs can be updated to accommodate for this change.
    • If you have any questions, please reach out to management and we will try and answer them the best that I can.
    • You may expect an update to vSTARS and vERAM soon to help with potential issues with this new system.
  • ACTION REQUIRED:
    • Begin to assign a squawk code to an aircraft immediately upon flight plan receipt and start practicing new workflows to know when an aircraft has received their clearance or not.

07JAN2022 (Security Update)

Previously, many of the programs required to be used to control on the network, required the user to “Run As Administrator” in order to ensure ease of use and compatibility with each other. Running programs as Administrator is generally considered unsafe but, we had no way of running our programs efficiently without it.

The ZLC IT department has now investigated these issues and have found that the previous reasons to run programs as admin are no longer valid. The one exception to this is AFV and the IT team has developed a way around it.

As of this day, ZLC no longer supports members running their applications/programs as “Administrator”.

To assist in the transition from “Run as Administrator”, a link will be provided below in the Action Required section.

  • ORIENTATION CBTs
    • Added “Safe Computer Management” section
    • All CBTs instructing users to install programs now have a reference to the Safe Computer Management CBTs.
    • AFV & Monitoring CBT updated with new instructions for how to launch AFV without Admin Privileges.

1-2-6 & 2-1-9 & 10-6-4 & 10-7-1 & 10-7-5
ABBREVIATIONS

The acronym “NOTAM” now stands for “Notice to Air Missions” (previously “Notice to Airmen”).

4-3-2 & 5-8-1
DEPARTURE CLEARANCES WITH HEADINGS

You are no longer able to assign a heading with a takeoff clearance within the DVA (Diverse Vector Area) if the pilot has been cleared via a SID.

  • EXCEPTION – When the departure route description on a radar SID contains the phrase, “Fly assigned heading,” “as assigned by ATC,” or similar phrases, with a published range of headings in the route description, assign headings or vectors as needed within those headings in the published range until reaching the MVA/MIA.
NOTE All departures at KSLC satisfy this requirement. i.e. SLC TWR may still issue a heading (per the SOP) to aircraft on a SID.

4-3-2.C.2
DEPARTURE CLEARANCES, ODP WITH VCOA

Pilots may now request, or controllers may now assign, a Visual Climb over Airport (VCOA) as part of an ODP clearance. An instruction must be issued to remain within a certain number of miles from the airport when approving the VCOA. Phraseology examples are also provided in the 7110.65 4-3-2.C.2.

5-3-3
SQUAWK CODE ASSIGNMENT WITHOUT ALTITUDE REPORTING

The old phraseology for when an aircraft’s transponder is turned off, SQUAWK (4 digit discrete code), AND IF YOUR ALTITUDE REPORTING EQUIPMENT IS TURNED OFF, SQUAWK ALTITUDE.”, is now just “SQUAWK (4 digit discrete code), SQUAWK ALTITUDE.

9-2-13
MILITARY AERIAL REFUELING ALTITUDE ASSIGNMENT

The old phraseology for instructing an aircraft to maintain a refueling altitude, “MAINTAIN REFUELING LEVEL (altitude)” is now changed to the standard block altitude phraseology, “MAINTAIN BLOCK (altitude) THROUGH (altitude)”.

7110.65z Change Briefing for vZLC (VATSIM)
These changes effective 17JUN2021

4-3-4
DEPARTURE RESTRICTIONS, CLEARANCE VOID TIMES,
HOLD FOR RELEASE, AND RELEASE TIMES

Even though it was standard practice to issue a release, hold for release, or release time with non-towered IFR departures, it is now a REQUIREMENT.

5-3-4 & 5-4-5 & 5-4-6
TRANSFER OF RADAR IDENTIFICATION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Multiple items were removed from these sections to remove ambiguity. Controllers only need to understand that the controller initiating a handoff is responsible for any and all coordination required with that handoff.

Example: John was controlling SLC_CTR and got a handoff of an aircraft from MSP_CTR that was going to enter DEN_CTR airspace for a little while before entering SLC airspace. In this scenario, John was able to accept the handoff without first coordinating a Point-Out with DEN_CTR because it was MSP_CTR responsibility as the initiating controller to conduct that coordination in a timely manner, and ideally prior to initiating a handoff to SLC_CTR.

5−9−6 & 5-9-7 & 5-9-8 & 5-9-9
SIMULTANEOUS APPROACHES

Changes in this section do not affect ZLC operations but for informational purposes: this change removes all references to airport field elevations as a condition to be met to conduct simultaneous independent approaches and creates new provisions to account for reduced runway centerline spacing (RCLS) when high update rate surveillance is used. This may be something that is useful with the new VATSIM “Velocity“ feature that will be released in the near future.

7−4−4
APPROACHES TO MULTIPLE RUNWAYS

When referencing Terminal (vSTARS) operations and relying on the primary target symbols for separation, the FAA now allows a “Fusion” target with that requirement. We do not yet have Fusion simulation but we might get it in vSTARS after VATSIM releases their ‘Velocity’ update.

This section is now also easier to read due to editorial changes by the FAA.

The paragraphs in this section with most significant changes ( 7-4-4 c.2) do not apply to any airports within ZLC Airspace, but for informational purposes: This change adds procedures for when aircraft are approaching from the same side of the airport. It also spells out the procedures when aircraft are approaching from opposite base legs, or when one aircraft is turning to final, and another aircraft is established on an adjacent runway centerline.
