Separation Standards

Anticipating Separation

A landing clearance needs not be withheld until prescribed separation exists if there is a reasonable assurance it will exist when the aircraft crosses the landing threshold.

Same Runway Separation

Appropriate separation must be maintained at all times when handling arriving and departing aircraft. Use the following rules to ensure the right amount of separation is supplied.

Ensure arriving aircraft to not cross the landing threshold until…

  • the other aircraft has landed and is clear of the runway.
  • the other aircraft has departed and crossed the runway end.

Landing Clearance

Issue a landing clearance by stating the runway number followed by the landing clearance.

Example:

DAL1465, runway 16L, cleared to land.

If the landing runway changes, state “change to runway” followed by the landing clearance.

Example:

DAL1465, change to runway 16L. Runway 16L, cleared to land.

Whenever a runway length has been temporarily or permanently shortened, state the word “shortened” immediately following the runway number as part of the takeoff clearance. The addition of “shortened” must be included in the takeoff clearance for the duration of the construction project when the runway is temporarily shortened. The addition of “shortened” must be included in the takeoff clearance until the Chart Supplement U.S. is updated to include the change(s) when the runway is permanently shortened.

Example:

DAL1465, runway 16L shortened, cleared to land.

If landing clearance is temporarily withheld instruct the aircraft to continue. If the runway is shortened state “shortened” right after the runway number and instruct the pilot to continue.

Example:

DAL1465, runway 16R, continue.
DAL1465, runway 16R shortened, continue.

Runway Exiting

Instruct aircraft where to turn-off the runway after landing, when appropriate, and advise the aircraft to hold short of a runway or taxiway if required for traffic. Do not issue taxi instructions to an aircraft prior to or immediately after landing. The pilot must read back any runway hold short instructions.

Example:

DAL1465, turn right on H5.
DAL1465, turn right when able.
DAL1465, turn right on H7, hold short of H.

Taxi instructions must be provided to the aircraft if compliance with instructions will be required before the aircraft can contact ground or the aircraft will be required to enter runway in order to taxi clear of the landing runway. The pilot must read back any runway hold short instructions.

Example:

DAL1465, turn left on D, cross runway 10L, contact ground 121.9.
DAL1465, turn left on next taxiway, cross runway 10L, hold short of A, contact ground 121.9.
